A New Season for Les Miles

The countdown to the kickoff of the 2010 college football season has finally hit single digits.  This year will be an important one for lots of programs, but perhaps none moreso than LSU’s coach Les Miles.  There is an article that sums up the feelings in Baton Rouge quite well at this link.

After winning the BCS national championship in 2007, Miles and company have recorded seasons of 8-5 and 9-4, and the wolves are out for his football hide in Baton Rouge.

A series of bad judgments with the hiring of assistant coaches, a poor offensive philosophy, fingers being pointed in Miles’ direction for getting involved in offensive play-calling, not properly playing talented underclassmen and sticking with underachieving juniors and seniors has landed Miles on the hot seat, despite a 51-15 record at LSU.

That’s right, the man who led the Bayou Bengals to the BCS Title just a few years ago is apparently on the hot seat.  This season, Miles has added another couple of new faces to his coaching staff, including former Florida WR Coach Billy Gonzales and former Tennessee RB coach Frank Wilson.

I’m also think Jordan Jefferson will finally perform up to his ability, after an inconsistent season last year as the starting quarterback.

With Jefferson, it is not a question of talent, but consistency on his part, showing more poise in crucial spots during a game and having an offense geared to playing to his strength.

When Miles dismissed talented, but troubled quarterback Ryan Perrilloux off the team in the spring of 2008, he did the right thing for his team, but what he failed to do was protect his two young quarterbacks in Jefferson and Jarrett Lee with an offense geared more to a run-oriented attack.

Lots of schools have passionate fans who put pressure on a program to perform up to a certain level on a yearly basis.  LSU’s fans, though, may be the most ”hardcore” in major college football.  Nick Saban brought the Tigers back from obscurity, and Miles’ early success continued on that.  These days, LSU always has one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, and the fans believe with all the talent on their squad, Miles should be able to plug in fresh, young players with little drop off.

Quarterbacks need to be developed slowly, without putting too much pressure on their shoulders when they have yet to gain the experience necessary to make crucial decisions on the playing field.  Jefferson has the talent to be a top flight QB, but offensive coordinator Gary Crowton must tailor the playcalling to suit the strengths of quarterback, and that means developing a consistent running game to balance out the offense.

LSU has always had a stable full of talented running backs, but for some reason, the Tigers have been extremely inconsistent running the football for years, going back to the Saban era.  With the exception of possible exception Jacob Hester, it’s been a long time since LSU has had a running back who had a “great career” running the football.  They’ve had some great seasons, but look at Charles Scott for example, who used up his final year of eligibility last season.  After a great junior campaign two years ago, injuries and inconsistency led to subpar rushing numbers last year, and it wasn’t the first time that LSU has had a RB with that type of career over the last decade.  Personally, I think they need to find one running back and stick with him, instead relying on a committee.

The offensive wildcard is definitely sophomore WR/QB/RB Russell Shepard, who has “seemlessly” made the transition from QB to reciever as he begins his sophomore season.  Along with Shepard, the Tigers return Terrance Tolliver, one of the best recievers in the country, and talented sophomore Reuben Randle.

Before last season, Les Miles was forced to replace his DCs after subpar campaigns, but he made a brilliant move in hiring John Chavis.  On defense-

the Tigers are led by two All-American candidates in cornerback Patrick Peterson, the best cover-cornerback in the SEC since Champ Bailey was at the University of Georgia, and linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, who is capable of playing any of the three linebacker spots on defense.

One thing that may play in the Tigers favor this season is that though they are not quite as experienced as the Gators or the Crimson Tide, they should get off to a hot start with a game against nationally ranked UNC, a program in a whole lot of trouble at the moment.

LSU Freshman QB Leaves Program

Another high profile freshman has announced that he will be leaving an SEC Power.  Quarterback Zach Lee, the 9th rated pro style quarterback coming out of high school and a four star recruit according to Rivals, has signed to play professional baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Lee, who had been participating in summer drills with the LSU football team, was signed to play both football and baseball for the Tigers, but will leave the university to concentrate on his professional baseball career full time.

Lee, a 6-feet-4, 200-pounder from McKinney, Texas, was the 28th pick in the Major League Baseball Draft in June. He made his decision late Monday night, minutes before the 11 p.m. CDT signing deadline. Steven Henson of Yahoo Sports reported the contract was for $5.25 million over five years.

In other football/baseball related news, Clemson sophomore and starting quarterback Kyle Parker has signed to play professional baseball with the Colorado Rockies.  Unlike Lee at LSU, Parker will not leave the Clemson football team, and is expected to be to suit up for the Tigers this season.

College Football Power Rankings: Season Forecast V

Today, we are going to look at a couple of longshots, according to the Vegas oddsmakers.  Neither of these teams are ranked as highly by those who make the odds, but they are two wildcards who I feel have as good of a shot as any to make the BCS title game and possibly walk away with a national championship next season.  It will be interesting to see if either are rated highly by any of the college football power ranking systems out there.

Round 5:  Longshots

Though they aren’t given as strong odds as some of the other teams (coming in with 20:1), the Miami Hurricanes will go into next season with as good of a chance as any to make to be a player in the BCS rankings.  They won’t have much to worry about when it comes to BCS ratings because their schedule includes Oklahoma, UCF, USF, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.  If they run the tables next season, I don’t see how they could be kept out of a potential title game.  Going itto 2010, all eyes will be on QB Jacory Harris, a legitimate Heisman candidate.  While he was inconsistent at times last year, the rising junior has a knack for performing well under pressure and will likely cut down on his interception totals of a year ago.  His favorite returning target is WR Leonard Hankerson, who totaled over 800 yards recieving last year, to go with 6 TD catches.  The ‘Canes will have to find a running game to go along with their passing attack if they want to compete for the ACC Title and a BCS berth.

While the Iowa Hawkeyes have a little better odds (20:1), the second team that should be considered are the LSU Tigers (25:1).  Playing in the SEC West, there are no doubts that if they won all their games then they would play for the title.  Gone from last years team is RB Charles Scott, who had a disappointing season, but the Tigers are loaded with talent at every position.  Offensively, most Tiger fans are expecting a breakout year from WR/QB Russell Shepherd.  Lost in the mix his freshman season, look for Shepherd to be featured prominently in LSU’s offense at reciever, while taking snaps at both RB and the QB position (out of the Wildcat formation).  For LSU to be a contender, they need to find some consistency from their quarterbacks.  Rising junior Jordan Jefferson has the talent, but has been plagued by inconsistency, which has opened the door for Jarrett Lee to possibly take back the starting position he lost two years ago.  Reports have said that Lee outperformed Jefferson during spring practice, but who lines up under center next season won’t likely be decided until summer practice.

Shepard Finally Getting Some Looks

After a year spent unsure of what his place was on LSU”s football team, Russell Shepherd is finally getting a chance to showcase his abilities this spring.  From the Shreveport Times:

After not touching the ball in the bowl game and the Florida game last season and usually only getting cursory usage, Shepard played for two LSU teams on this day.

“Oh, I definitely got winded,” Shepard said. “But it was fun.”

Shepard got his wind back and ended up totalling 117 yards on 12 touches for both teams — 66 yards rushing on eight carries and 51 yards receiving on four catches.

“It was an opportunity to get the ball in space,” Shepard said. “I’m liking it. Who doesn’t want the ball?”

Coming out of high school, Shepard was ranked as one of the Top 3 quarterbacks in the nation.  In all reality, he was a pure athlete as he was a bit small for a quarterback in the SEC.  After a season spent without a real position, it seems that Coach Les Miles is determined to find a spot (or multiple spots) on the field that will best utilize Shepard’s abilities as a runner.  While he may line up at quarterback on occasion, he will most likely find himself in a similar position to that of Randall Cobb at Kentucky: a wide reciever who can throw the ball when lined up in the wildcat formation.

SEC Recruiting Recap: LSU

Recruiting Recap:  LSU

While Les Miles and the LSU Tigers didn’t bring in their almost customary Top 3 class this year, they still finished in the Top 10 according to three of the main recruiting services.  To put it more bluntly, LSU is always going to bring in a lot of talent, and this year is no different.  With a year of John Chavis’ system under their belt, the defense should already be much improved, and this years recruiting class will only add to the talent that is already present there.  LSU signed four different 4 star prospects who project as defensive ends at the next level, including Memphis standout Justin Maclin and VA native J.R. Ferguson.  All-everything athlete Spencer Ware is more of a question mark, though, as the coaching staff will have to figure out where he best fits.

Class Rankings:

Rivals – 6th; Scout – 7th; ESPN – 8th

Star of the Class

ATH Spencer Ware

Rivals Ranking: #3 athlete, 19th overall player in the nation

While Spencer Ware has all the accolades and is indeed the only 5 star player (according to Rivals) to sign with LSU, he may not be the first to see the field next year.  He played quarterback in high school, but has been projected as a RB in college.  The problem with this is that he might be to slow to become an elite tailback in the SEC, and may be much more suited to fullback.  This would limit his carries at the next level.

Sleeper of the Class

DE Justin Maclin

Rivals Ranking: #20 DE in the nation

Maclin will be a stud at DE in the SEC.  He will eventually grow into his 6′4” frame, and with the size to go with his 4.5 40 yd. dash, he should make the transition from linebacker to defensive end quite nicely.  He was an underrated prospect, and an absolute steal for Les Miles and the LSU Tigers.  He is much quicker than the other DEs that were signed.
