Preseason College Football- Heisman Contender #5: Ryan Mallett

We now hit the top 5 Heisman Contenders…

Heisman Trophy Candidate #5

Ryan Mallett- QB, University of Arkansas

2009 Stats: 225-403, 3627 yds, 55.8%, 30 TD, 7 Int

Ryan Mallett has found a home at Arkansas under Coach Bobby Petrino.  The #1 QB prospect in the country coming out of high school, Mallett transferred to Fayettville from the University of Michigan after Rich Rodriguez was named their head coach afterhis freshman season.  At Michigan, he played in 11 games as a freshman, completing 61 of 141 passes for 892 yards with 7 touchdowns and 5 picks.

After sitting out the 2008 season because of transfer rules, Mallett blossomed last year.  He threw for 3500+ yards with over 30 touchdowns and only 7 picks, leading Arkansas back to a bowl game after missing out on one in 2008.  With his unbelievable arm strength, Mallett is considered a lock to be a 1st round pick, and most experts believe that the upcoming season will be his last as a college football player, and that he will declare himself eligible for the NFL Draft next year.  Experts also see him as a lock to be in NYC this December.  Some consider him the favorite, and I wouldn’t argue with the idea that he is one of the top contenders for the trophy.  Like many of the other previous contenders, Mallett will need the rest of his team to perform at the same level to improve on their 8-5 record.

SEC Recruiting Recap: University of Arkansas

Class Recap:  University of Arkansas

The University of Arkansas may not have had the most heralded recruiting class, but they filled most of their needs and brought in a few blue chip prospects along the way, led by 4 star  DTs Calvin Barnett and Byran Jones.  Also in the mix is 4 star OT Cam Feldt.  Head Coach Bobby Petrino filled this class with numerous athletes who could concievably fit in a number of different positions on the field, including athletic dual threat quarteback Jacoby Walker

Post Signing Day Rankings:

Rivals- 48th, Scout- 36th, ESPN- unranked

Star of the Class:

DT Calvin Barnett

Rivals Ranking:

#13 Defensive Tackle in the nation;

#108 overall prospect

This award would have to go to the above mentioned DT Calvin Barnett.  Barnett wasn’t only a signing day surprise, but he was stolen right out from under the nose of Bob Stoops.  The number 1 rated player in the state of Oklahoma, Barnett should see the field quite a bit next season, as the Arkansas defense has been suspect the last two years under Petrino.

Class Sleeper:

QB Jacoby Walker

Rivals Ranking:

#33 Dual Threat Quarterback in the nation

Under the radar, Walker could develop into an very good quarterback for the Razorbacks.  He can be very accurate, has a strong arm, and the speed to avoid the rush and gain positive yardage with his legs.  Walker is a leader by example, letting his actions do the talking for him, and keeps his composure under pressure.
