Kickoff Zone Power Ratings

History of "THE KICKOFF" Power Ratings

The Kickoff has been calculating mathematical college football power ratings since 1951 - the oldest recorded Power Ratings in the history of college football. In that time span, the power ratings formula has gone through a few modifications but the basics that were successful then are still used today.

The Kickoff Power Ratings produce the relative strength of every college football team.

Some of the Power Rating factors that are used include:

  • Returning Starters - This is used more for the pre-season ratings
  • Historical Success - Includes both in conference and out-of-conference
  • Recent Success - Strength over the past 5 seasons
  • Margin of Victory - Margin is determined based on several factors
  • Winning Streaks - A winning streak is considered 3 wins in a row or more
  • Historical strength of the Conference a school is a member
  • Historical strength of the Independents
  • Intangibles - These are points awarded based on various factors such as a win in a hostile environment, putting substitutes in as opposed to running up the score with the starters, etc.
